The biogas market in Romania is in a growing phase, and in the context of the global energy transition, Romania has the opportunity to become an important player in the biogas sector, thus contributing to a greener and more sustainable economy.
Biogas demand is expected to grow by 20% this decade.
Romania has significant untapped biomethane potential, which is estimated at over 2 billion cubic metres by 2030, second only to Poland in the CEE region.
Romania is the sixth largest market in the EU in terms of potential for biogas and biomethane, while Germany ranks first.
There are challenges ahead, including regulatory bottlenecks, lack of financial support from the state, a highly fragmented playing field, undeveloped databases, the need for multiple and complex commercial agreements, and the high execution risk inherited from developing multi faceted energy projects in Romania.
Biogas production results from the industrial processing by anaerobic digestion of manure, food processing and slaughterhouse waste, municipal waste, sewage sludge and agricultural residues.
Basically, biogas transforms these harmful wastes that pollute farmland and landfills and create significant odours and health hazards into a renewable methane as a direct substitute for natural gas or energy production and a sanitised digestate that can be used as a high-quality fertiliser, free of weed seeds and pathogens (both in liquid and solid form). Biogas is thus a sustainable product.
